Hardware is often overlooked but it is one of the little details that has a huge impact on the overall look of your kitchen, bathroom, and built-ins. Here are some questions we are often asked:
Does my hardware need to be the same finish as my appliances or faucets?
Absolutely not- “matchy matchy” finishes are a thing of the past. You can even have different hardware finishes in the same kitchen. We see this a lot with the parameter having different hardware than the island. With hardware specifically we recommend no more than two finishes but hey, you do you.
Handles or Knobs?
Take a look at cabinet doors and drawers. Consider their size, functionality, and traffic area. Handle sizes can vary from 3 inches to 30. Large handles for larger doors, small ones for smaller doors, and knobs on drawers or doors - the possibilities are endless. I’m personally partial to handles for pulling out and knobs for opening from the side. There’s a wealth of possibilities.
What to avoid?
I HATE open ended handles! Sweater snags, jean tugs, purse pulls- they are a nuisance and a hassle when moving around your kitchen. Grrrrrrrrr…..
I LOVE a bargain, but often hardware bargains just translate into a poorly made product. When choosing, read reviews, ask the company for a few samples, or see if you can buy a few different ones and then return. Consider the weight, consistency of the finishes, and overall feel. This is an area in the kitchen I would not skimp on.
Be aware that some knobs have “anchors” on their back to help them stay stationary. When installed they make indentations to the drawer and door. If you choose to change your hardware in the future, you are limited to making sure your new hardware covers those.
What to Budget?
Hardware prices range from $2-$50 per piece. For an average size kitchen, expect to spend at least $300. Our go-to brands and sites are Goo-Ki, Top Knobs, D. Lawless, Signature Hardware, and some choices from Amazon.
