Jen Maloni started making things beautiful long before she started The Coo Coo’s Nest in 2013.
Since she can remember, Jen, alongside her Mother Bonnie, would spend hours scouring vintage shops and thrift stores for those one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture and home décor. Fondly referred to as “treasure hunting,” sometimes they even scored finds on the side of the road. Jen and Bonnie would take these unwanted throwaways and transform them into beautiful pieces. Jen saw the impact a different coat of stain, new paint color, reframe, or simple upholstery project could have, bringing these items back to life. Those days of treasure hunting and transformation were the birthplace of The Coo Coo’s Nest philosophy of Refinish, Restyle, Reimagine.
Jen started her professional career, not with a paint brush, but with a cosmetic one as a makeup artist and counter manager for luxury brands Lancome, Mac ,and others. There her acumen for color and shading helped transform the faces of her clients.
After years at home with her profoundly autistic sons Dylan and Dominic, Jen was ready to get back to work… but her job needed to be flexible. The treasure hunting and transformations started again when Jen opened a space in The Blue Hearth of Montgomery County. This shop full of vintage finds, original artwork, and a design studio was the perfect place to sell her unique furniture. Her space at The Blue Hearth was always one of the most popular. Jen grew her reputation and became known for her quality work, attention to detail, and thoughtful design. A loyal client encouraged Jen to expand her painting and design skills to a kitchen, and, thus, The Coo Coo’s Nest was born. 10 years and hundreds of projects later, Jen has built a business that is proud to be Woman-Owned and Woman-Operated.

Jen and her team are all part of the Carroll, Howard, Montgomery, and Frederick communities. You might see them at the local market, a school’s PTA meeting or local sporting event. The team is composed of some hardcore DIYers, carpentry specialists, fine art enthusiasts, home decorating gurus and spraying artists. They all share Jen’s dedication to bringing quality and transformation into neighbor’s homes.
We look forward to working on your project to Refinish, Restyle, Reimagine - making what was old, new.
